My Review / Thoughts

“A good kiss will do that: make a girl forget herself for a while.” -How To Fail at Flirting

This book captured all the classic romance tropes in such a cute way. The dynamic between the main characters was very satisfying, and Aaron Blackford was an exceptional book boyfriend. Another quote I liked was, “Because it was all you were willing to give me. And I’d rather have you hating me than not have you at all.” It reveals so much about Aarons’s character and reminded me of Rhysand from A Court of Thorns and Roses, who similarly accepted being misunderstood if it meant keeping someone he loved safe and grounded.

While I enjoyed the story, I think a dual perspective chapter could have added more emotional depth and insight into Aaron’s motivations. Additionally, the third-act conflict felt a bit forced and didn’t contribute as meaningfully to the narrative as it tends to in other romance novels. That said, I would definitely recommend it to fans of slow-burn, trope-filled romances.

Summary of the Book

Catalina Martín desperately needs a date to her sister’s wedding. Especially since her little white lie about her American boyfriend has spiralled out of control. Now everyone she knows—including her ex and his fiancée—will be there and eager to meet him.

She only has four weeks to find someone willing to cross the Atlantic and aid in her deception. New York to Spain is no short flight and her raucous family won’t be easy to fool.

Enter Aaron Blackford—her tall, handsome, condescending colleague—who surprisingly offers to step in. She’d rather refuse; never has there been a more aggravating, blood-boiling, and insufferable man.

But Catalina is desperate, and as the wedding draws nearer, Aaron looks like her best option. And she begins to realize he might not be as terrible in the real world as he is at the office.
