My Review / Thoughts

“I’ve never met someone who is so perfectly my favorite person.” -Beach Read

This book put a spin on the grumpy x sunshine or rivales trope. The fmc and mmc take on each other’s perspective throughout the book. This made their connection seem less forced. Although, it was very predictable because some of their joint outings were fake dates.

I appreciate the fact that Gus didn’t sugar coat anything for January when it came to his relationship with his ex wife. This comes off as respectful and also give meaning to their relationship becasue her clearly values relationships in general. He’s also an amazing book boyfriend overall.

In the end, it seemed like the kind of book that Gus might have written for the bet he made with January. I would recommend this book if you’re looking for a chill airport read with a non stressful third act.

Summary of the Book

Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes bestselling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast.

They’re polar opposites.

In fact, the only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they’re living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer’s block.

Until, one hazy evening, one thing leads to another and they strike a deal designed to force them out of their creative ruts: Augustus will spend the summer writing something happy, and January will pen the next Great American Novel. She’ll take him on field trips worthy of any rom-com montage, and he’ll take her to interview surviving members of a backwoods death cult (obviously). Everyone will finish a book and no-one will fall in love. Really.
